Why Shopping Small Matters

By Daniela Ortiz, Creative Financial Strategies

More Than a Purchase, It’s an Investment in Our Community

When you shop at a locally owned business, you’re doing more than buying a product or service. You’re supporting a neighbor’s dream, contributing to local jobs, and keeping more economic activity right here in our community.

And in Edmond, where local businesses help create the character and energy of our neighborhoods, that matters.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2026 data:

  • 99.9% of U.S. businesses are small businesses
  • Small businesses employ 62.3 million people
  • They represent 45.9% of private-sector workers
  • They account for 43.5% of U.S. GDP

In other words, small businesses aren’t a small part of our economy—they’re a huge part of it.

Your Dollars Have a Ripple Effect

When you spend money at a locally owned business, more of that economic activity has the opportunity to circulate within the community. Local businesses may hire local employees, work with other local businesses and service providers, and reinvest in the communities they call home.

The exact impact varies, but the idea is simple: where you spend your money can influence where that money goes next.

The next time you grab coffee, buy a gift, stop for lunch, or discover a new favorite shop, remember that your purchase can create a much bigger ripple.

That’s Where Sip, Shop & Stroll Comes In

On September 29, Edmond Young Professionals is putting the spotlight on the businesses that make up the Plaza at Stephenson Park with Sip, Shop & Stroll.

Come explore the Plaza, discover local businesses, meet the people behind them, and enjoy an evening of shopping, sipping, strolling, and connecting.

Supporting local doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it simply means choosing to try the locally owned shop down the street or discovering a business you’ve never visited before.

Shop Small. Discover Something New. Invest in Edmond.
