The Primary Election on June 18, 2024, Will Include a Proposition to Increase the Edmond Lodging Tax From 4% to 6%.

When visitors choose to spend the night within Edmond city limits, they contribute to a vital aspect of our community’s growth and prosperity: the lodging tax. This revenue isn’t just a mere levy; it’s a catalyst for a flourishing local economy. By enticing visitors to stay, we’re not only welcoming them to our city but also paving the way for increased sales tax revenue that funds amenities like streets, parks, trails, and attractions. This ripple effect is substantial, as it fuels our ability to enhance the very fabric of Edmond living.

So, when you see visitors exploring our city, dining at local eateries, and indulging in retail therapy, know that their contributions extend far beyond their temporary stay. They’re not just visitors; they’re partners in progress, helping us build a brighter, more prosperous future for Edmond.

It is essential that we continue to invest in initiatives that boost our local economy, which is why the Edmond Chamber Board of Directors has endorsed the passage of the proposed lodging tax increase.

Statistics:

Edmond currently has the lowest tax rate in the metropolitan area, standing at a modest 4%. When compared to our neighboring cities, the difference becomes even more pronounced. Consider this: while Edmond’s current tax rate remains at 4%, other metropolitan areas like Norman, Guthrie, Stillwater, and even Oklahoma City have tax rates ranging from 5.5% to as high as 8%.

This tax increase not only benefits our residents but also extends a warm invitation to visitors seeking affordable accommodations. Take, for instance, an overnight stay totaling $100 within our city limits. With a lodging tax of just 6%, guests would only incur an additional $2 to their bill—a nominal fee for the enriching experience of exploring our vibrant community.

Looking ahead, an incremental increase from 4% to 6% in the lodging tax is projected to yield an impressive $500,000 annually. These additional funds present a golden opportunity for tourism development initiatives, spearheaded by Visit Edmond. By strategically leveraging the revenue from this visitor tax, we aim to position Edmond as a premier destination, enticing travelers near and far to discover all that our city has to offer.
