Name: Maggie Murdock Nichols
Title/Professional Organization: City Council Ward 1 – Freelance Communication and Nonprofit Consultant
What originally brought you to Edmond? I was born and raised in Edmond. I am a 3rd generation Edmond resident and raising the fourth. It was with intention that I choose to stay, committing to invest in the community that gave so much to me!
What is your favorite thing about Edmond? The people are what make Edmond a place and that’s my favorite part. I especially love the opportunity to run into friends and family and that most often happens in the downtown area, city parks and walking trails.
What made you want to run for City Council? I had the honor of being appointed to city council following a vacancy. Per the charter, the four remaining council members (Mayor Davis, Council Members Moore, Mugg, and Peterson) unanimously voted to appoint me out of a handful of other applicants. I take the duty very seriously and greatly enjoy serving in this way.
What has been a pleasant surprise since being elected to Edmond City Council? I have enjoyed learning more about Edmond history and the “why” behind many city efforts, resolutions, and ordinances. Though my roots run deep, there is always more to learn and I am committed to listening. The history and where we came from informs us as we move forward.
What is one piece of leadership advice that you received as a young professional that made an impact on you? I picked up a lot of advice from mothers who led by example, caring for their young families with commitment to their careers. I saw that it was not a perfect balance. I have been freelance for almost ten years. As my own boss, I try to extend grace to myself in the same way I’d extend it to others.
City council is a big commitment, it requires a lot of attention. I take the privilege of having a seat at the dias very seriously. I think about the many young families who may not have the time to commit to paying attention to city government due to the demands of work or raising a family. I promise to speak up for us and represent us well.
What is your favorite local Edmond spot to grab coffee, lunch, or shop? My favorite spots include Cafe 501, Sweet Friends Bakery, Railyard Pie, Empire, The Mule, Evoke and Twisted Tree. Good food with good company brings me a lot of joy! Pilates at Ebb and Flow and barre at The Body Barre keep me feeling strong and ready for the demands of the day. I enjoy shopping at Bluebird Books (I am a proud co-owner among several other women), Parcel, and Mode.
