EDMOND AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES 2010 ANNUAL AWARDS WINNERS

EDMOND, OK – The Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2010 Annual Awards Banquet to honor the achievements and contributions of many of Edmond’s finest companies and citizens. The banquet was held at the UCO Nigh University Ballroom on February 11, 2011. More than 400 members of the Edmond community attended the event presented by Edmond Electric with Cox Business as the Wine Sponsor, Cimarron Software Services as the Entertainment Sponsor and Oklahoma Natural Gas as the Silver Sponsor.  AT&T hosted a VIP reception prior to the event.  The theme of the evening was  Love is All You Need.  The evening featured a Photo Booth provided by the Oklahoma Photo Booth.  Videos of featured couples were also shown throughout the night and were provided by Creative Photo Video. 

Mercy Health Ambassador of the Year

Chamber Ambassadors are a group of dedicated volunteers who mentor Chamber members, attend ribbon-cuttings, events and special meetings. The honor of Ambassador of the Year is awarded to the Chamber Ambassador who is able to make the highest number of goodwill calls, ribbon-cuttings and groundbreaking events throughout the year. The award is decided on a point based system with participants earning points by their involvement. Dr.  Harry Kocurek was named Ambassador of the Year again this year.  Joe White, Shelter Insurance was named Ambassador of the Year Runner-up.

Volunteer of the Year

The Edmond Chamber has many volunteers that are a part of many councils, task forces, programs and events. Angie Johnson, Coppermark Bank, was named 2010 Volunteer of the Year for her leadership and dedication to the Edmond Chamber as well as the community. Johnson worked tirelessly on the Women’s Network Council helping to create the Woman of the Year Award as well as the Annual Women’s Conference.    

Tayo Fichtl Young Professional Award presented by OU Medical Center Edmond

Kenneth Wohl of SpiritBank was the winner of the 2010 Tayo Fichtl Young Professional Award. This award is given to a young professional who demonstrates leadership, provides valuable service to their business or profession, gives back to their community, exhibits initiative and creativity and serves as a role model for young people, both personally and professionally.

Wohl is very involved in the Edmond community serving on the boards of the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and Ambucs and UCO Alumni. He was appointed to the Central Edmond Urban Board Member and the Visual Arts Commission of Edmond.  Wohl is also active in his church.     

Chairman’s Award

The Chairman’s Award was a special honor given by the 2010 Edmond Chamber Chairman of the Board, Tim Deimund of MidFirst Bank. This award was given to the person who contributed the most to the chairman’s term. Jan Moran, AT&T, was the recipient of the award for her support, knowledge and encouragement throughout the year.   

Bank of Oklahoma Small Business of the Year

The Small Business of the Year Award, now in its 9th year, honors small businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the economy and community. Nominees must be an owner/partner/major shareholder of the business and must be active in the day-to-day management and operation of the business. The business should also display leadership in business and community affairs, be actively involved in professional and/or trade associations and maintain equal opportunity employment.

The Bank of Oklahoma Small Business of the Year finalists were recognized by a video presentation of the three finalists: T&S Web Design, Krista M. Jones D.D.S and Edmond Life & Leisure.

Edmond Life & Leisure was the winner of 2010 Small Business of the Year.  Edmond Life and Leisure has been in business since 2000 and has been a member of the Chamber since that time. They were founded on the principle of having an Edmond owned and operated newspaper that reports about the people, families and neighborhoods of Edmond. This company has excelled in technology by being the first newspaper to offer online PDF searchable flip pages and being the second newspaper behind the Tulsa World to have their own iPhone application. 

Coppermark Bank Woman of the Year

            The Coppermark Bank Woman of the Year award had four finalists.  Finalists included: Mo Anderson, Keller Williams; Tonya Coffman, Churchill Brown; Shannon Entz, City of Edmond; Nancy Hyde, Hyde and Company CPAs.  Anderson was the 2010 recipient and was selected because of her outstanding contribution to the Edmond community. 

Citizen of the Year

The Citizen of the Year must demonstrate one or more of the following: excellence in their business or profession, brought state or national acclaim to the City of Edmond, been involved in activities for the betterment of Edmond or served through involvement with civic and service organizations. Nominations are sent to a panel of judges who decide the winner.

The 2010 Citizen of the Year was Dr. Brenda Lyons.  For the past 32 years, Lyons has been has been involved in almost every aspect of Edmond’s outstanding educational system having served as a high school teacher, Department Head, middle school Principal, Director of Secondary Education and Associate Superintendent. She has served as President of two of her professional organizations.
